Cherries

Cherries

I absolutely love cherries and even better they are in season in Australia this time of the year, although their season will soon be ending.  Don’t be fooled by the American imports around our winter…if there are cherries in shops in winter you can be guaranteed they have been imported from overseas.
Cherries are nutrient dense little packages of sweet or sour goodness.  They are high in Vitamin C and potassium, good Vitamin A and calcium, some B vitamins, phosphorus, magnesium and manganese.  Quite good levels of copper and iron as well as high levels of antioxidants.
Due to their high level of iron and Vitamin C content they are a good way to boost iron levels for those that are low or anemic and cherries help improve blood.  They are also good colon cleansers as they enhance bowel motility.  They are a great remedy for gout, arthiritis and rheumatism in that they help the body to elimiate excess body acids.
Eat cherries while they are around on their own, in fruit salads, added to regular salad, make sauces with them (particularly good with duck, chicken, turkey or pork), bake them into healthy muffins and pancakes, make refreshing summer drinks or preserve them to use all year round.
Don’t be mistaken in thinking glace cherries are the same.  They are saturated in so much sugar that they barely resemble the original fruit…
