Mango
Mango
They are the second largest tropical fruit crop after bananas in the world. They are the 4th ranked most consumed fruit too (bananas, citrus and apples just beat them). Did you know it’s the national tree of India!?
Qld and NT produce the majority of Australia’s mangoes and we have created some of our own varieties eg Bowen and Kensington Pride.
I always associate summer and Christmas in Australia with Mangoes! I love that we can only get these beauties fresh at this time of year and it makes them all the more special and delicious!
They are fairly high in vitamin C and some Vitamin E. Extremely rich in the precursor to Vitamin A having a high concentration of beta carotene. Good source of fibre. Rich in the minerals zinc, magnesium and potassium with a number of phytochemicals of particular mention quercetin.
They can be eaten with some many things, fresh on their own, cooked with chicken and prawn dishes, in salsas/chutneys, in salads, cocktails, desserts and smoothies. Eat them anyway you wish while they are still around over the next few months.
