Flaxseeds
Flaxseeds
Also called linseeds these little seeds contain the highest percentage of essential fatty acids (Omega 3 and 6) of any oil bearing seed. These fats don’t actually make you fat but are healing by providing hormone-like substances to help with proper functioning of the brain, nervous system and skin.
They can help prevent blood platelets from becoming sticky and forming blood clots = great for high blood pressure! Also great for helping with stomach ulcers, heartburn, constipation, gastrointestional discomfort and are great to help the body become more alkaline.
Besides good fats, flaxseeds also contain fibre and mucilage, lignans (phytoestrogens), Vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D and E, trace minerals and good levels of carotene, lecithin and phospholipids. These little seeds are powerhouses of nutrition and are considered a super food! They are nearly a complete protein too!
They come as whole seeds, ground up as a meal or as an oil. Add them to salads, cereals, smoothies or baking. Ground up meal can be used as a face mask and also as a poultice for bruised strained muscles or for any burns/inflammation. One of the most well known combinations which includes flaxseeds is LSA being linseeds, sunflower seeds and almonds ground up together. This is a great combination which can be added to so many things!
