Canola Oil

I usually have Food of the Week with foods that are beneficial, but thought I would touch on some foods that aren’t so great for us.

Canola oil is one oil we should try to avoid.

This oil started out as a genetically modified version of rapeseed. Genetically modified foods in general should be avoided.  Our bodies don’t always recognise the changes that humans have made to these plants.  Don’t be mistaken by the “organic” versions on the market.  Yes they may be now organically farmed, but they still originate from the genetic changes we made to the natural rapeseed plant.

Canola oil is a highly refined oil.  We want the least refined oils as possible in their more natural state.  This means it can reduce the amount of nutrients it has.  For example canola has around 10% omega 3 fatty acids, but refining it will damage this omega 3 content.  It is recommended due to it’s low saturated fat content, but this doesn’t make it a healthy oil.

There are many more better oils you could be consuming over canola.

It is a pretty flower though and looks amazing from the sky when there are large farms of yellow!
