Q & A…
What are ways can you reduce intestinal gas when eating legumes?
If you are using dried legumes, sprouting or soaking them in water overnight will help you digest these little parcels of nutrition. Sprouting and soaking grains can also make them better digested too.
Different legumes can be digested better if adding either apple cider vinegar or baking soda to the soaking water. Lima beans and black eyed peas do better adding a pinch of baking soda. 12-24 hour soak time.
Lentils and soy beans are easier digested when adding apple cider vinegar. You can also pop in a few pieces of kombu seaweed. Around 12 hour soak time.
Also ensuring you cook them for at least 1 hour (often recipes say only 30 minutes). Canned legumes should be easier to digest, but ensure you cook them for around 1 hour too.
Note – No amount of soaking will make chickpeas any easier to digest as it doesn’t release the phytic acid that contributes to digestive issues.
I often have soaking legumes sitting around my house!
