Papple
Have you ever had a papple?
I just came across them for the first time at my local farmers market.
They are in fact a pear – a hybrid of European and Asian pears created in New Zealand in 1996.
They have a similar texture and crunch to a Nashi Pear and also are quite juicy like these and other pears, but the taste is a bit more like an apple, even though they aren’t related at all to apples.
I found it very enjoyable and it would be good to use in any way that you would use apples or pears.
Note though, it did start to oxidise and turn brown quickly, so perhaps not something to put on a cheese platter display.
Have a read here of the nutritional attributes of a pear that apply to papples.
