Mouth Microbiome
Everyone has heard they have a microbiome (trillions of organisms and their genetic material) in their gut, but did you know you also have other areas in your body with their own microbiome such as your skin, nasal passage and mouth.
The mouth microbiome is one that we possibly do the most damage to on a regular basis without even realising it, as it is the first point of putting anything in our bodies via our mouth.
Within your mouth, on and under your tongue, in your cheeks you have billions of bacteria, good and bad. Anything that we put in our mouths can affect these bacteria. Sugar can increase the bad guys and simply brushing your teeth can affect the good guys. Not all toothpastes are created equal and if you are using one with sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), it might be worth looking for one without SLS as this can disrupt the balance of the mouth’s microbiome. Another product used daily by many people is mouthwash. Most mouthwashes, as they contain alcohol (and various other chemicals) will also kill the good bacteria in your mouth. It doesn’t discriminate. Mouthwash is not necessary, but has some great marketing.
If your mouth’s microbiome is affected, then this will not help your gut’s microbiome as this is extended from your mouth all the way to your anus (what goes in, must come out). When doing anything to help treat gut and digestive problems, the mouth microbiome should be taken into account. Making sure you look after your mouth microbiome is very important. There are some natural ways to make sure the mouth microbiome is taken care of and that starts with a natural toothpaste and minimising sugar and sugary drink intake. Also to take into consideration is how often do you change your toothbrush? Every time you have a cold or virus you should definitely change your toothbrush to avoid reinfecting yourself. Generally, it’s not a great idea to share toothbrushes as everyone’s microbiome is unique to them, there is no need to share your micro-organisms.
