Elderberry Syrup

So Elderberry syrup seems to be “the thing” at the moment to help keep colds and flus at bay naturally.

I just made up a batch now it’s the start of Autumn to ensure my family is covered.

It’s not meant as a long term preventative, but taken at the first sign you are aren’t feeling well.

Adults:  1-2 tablespoons every 4-6 hours at the first sign of a cold. And can be taken for the duration of the cold, which should be shorter, if it does take hold.

Children (under 12 years) – 1 teaspoon a day or 1 teaspoon every hour if symptoms have fully started.

Toddlers (2-3 year olds) – Half dose of “children dose”.

Not suitable for under 1 year old’s due to the honey. But you could make up a batch for your baby without the honey.

If you are ever unsure of taking a natural therapy, then it is best to talk to a qualified practitioner such as myself (a nutritionist) or a naturopath.

Ingredients:

1 cup dried organic elderberries

3 cups filtered water

3 organic cinnamon sticks

3 organic cloves

about a thumb sized piece of ginger, sliced

1/4 cup raw organic honey

Method:

  1. Put everything in a saucepan and bring to a simmer – Do not boil.  Reduce heat and cover, but leave lid tilted to vent.  Gently simmer for 40 minutes.  Mash the berries to release all the juice.
  2. Allow to sit for a few minutes then strain off the liquid using cheese cloth or a thin towel.  Squeeze out of the juice as much as you can.
  3. Cool the liquid completely and then add the honey.  Stir through.
  4. Bottle the syrup and store in the fridge for up to 4 months, ensuring you shake well every time before use.
