Lemons
Lemons
Lemons are very similar to limes – see my article on limes http://www.balancingnutrition.com/?p=770
Lemons are a cleanser, purifier, rejuvenator and detoxifier so are very handy to help with liver detox and fat metabolism.
Half a lemon squeezed into water and drunk 20-30 mins before a meal can help stimulate gastric juices and help with digestion. And lemon water can also help reduce appetite if we are trying to avoid overeating.
Lemons are extremely high in vitamin C and potassium, but also contain calcium, magnesium and phosphorus particularly in the rind and pulp. There are some good phytonutrients in lemons such as coumarins.
Lemon can be used externally to heal sores, to relieve itching from bites, and to soften and reduce corns. 1 drop of fresh juice combined with warm water can make a cleansing eye wash.
Internally lemon juice diluted in some water can help calm the nerves, treat a sore throat, help with cramps and any fluid deficiency or if you have had excess salt/fat/protein.
Lemons have great antiseptic, anti-microbial and mucous-resolving properties just like limes as mentioned above!
