Tahini
Tahini
What is…Tahini? Tahini is a smooth butter or paste that is made from hulled or unhulled ground sesame seeds. It can be sold raw or the sesame seeds can be toasted before ground giving a deeper flavour. The unhulled version has more nutrients but is also stronger in flavour.
Tahini is very high in protein, B vitamins, choline, Vitamin E and some vitamin A. Its one of the richest sources of calcium (can have more than cow’s milk!) and also contains magnesium, potassium, iron and phosphorus. Its one of the richest sources of the amino acid methionine and contains good levels of lecithin.
It can protect against environmental toxins and can reduce fat levels in the blood.
It can be used as a spread or a dip, used in salad dressings/marinades, added to homemade bliss balls, used as a thickener for soups or an alternative to peanut butter.
